To enhance the learning experience, two OST students were sponsored by the Department of Ocean Science to participate in a 1-month summer exchange program named The Vancouver Summer Program (VSP) in The University of British Columbia, Canada. Offered by the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, students attended project-based courses related to the environmental challenges now we are facing, from overexploitation and marine pollution to climate change and ocean acidification. Prof. Jianping GAN, Chair Professor of Department of Ocean Science was awarded a HK$ 87.147 million by the Research Grants Council (RGC)’s Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme 2023/24 with the project title “Study of the Regional Earth System for Sustainable Development under Climate Change in the Greater Bay Area”. The HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Team has been named champion in Explorer Class of the Hong Kong Regional of the MATE International ROV Competition 2023. The ROV Team, a sub-team of the HKUST Robotics Team, will represent Hong Kong to join the MATE International ROV Competition 2023, which will be held in Longmont, Colorado in Jun 2023. Read more

On 25th March 2023, OCES 2100 students, led by Dr. Cynthia Yau and Dr. Cindy Lam, visited Ocean Park's nursery facilities. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the artificial breeding programs for endangered local freshwater turtles, like the Beale's eyed turtle. Experts from Ocean Park explained how these programs operate, showing the students the breeding process and the actions taken to protect these rare turtles. Read more

OCES 2100 students embarked on an enlightening field trip to Pak Tam Chung River, Sai Kung, on 18th November 2022. Led by Dr. Cindy Lam, the trip focused on the observation and understanding of freshwater turtles in their natural habitat. Dr. Lam elucidated on the conservation efforts and challenges faced by these fascinating creatures. The trip included a hands-on session to understand the turtle's behavior and the ecosystem they inhabit. Read more

On 12 Nov 2022, HKUST students were invited to join a guided tour of the Mai Po Nature Reserve. The objective of this excursion was to deepen the participants' comprehension of wetland conservation, sustainable fisheries management, and biodiversity. Under Dr. Cindy Lam's guidance, OCES3330 students delved into our local wetlands (e.g. Kei Ling Ha Lo Wai, Sai Kung)  during Fall 2022. Regular field surveys provided hands-on experience in investigating the diversity and abundance of local flora and fauna. These explorations enriched students' understanding of marine organisms and habitats, and the critical role they play in our environment, underscoring the theories covered in lectures. The surveys also illuminated the relevance of conservation efforts. Read more
