Navigating Your Future: Highlights from the OCES Alumni Sharing Session

2025-03-28

On March 12, 2025, the Department of Ocean Science (OCES) hosted an inspiring Alumni Career Session featuring 6 distinguished alumni who shared their career journeys and decision-making processes with current students. The event began with an opening speech by Prof. Stanley Lau, who expressed gratitude to the alumni and encouraged students to thoughtfully plan for their futures.

The alumni represented a variety of sectors and showcased diverse career paths. Some graduates, like Franklin and Hugo, pursued expected occupational options, entering the fields of Education and Animal Conservation, respectively, and applying the knowledge they gained during their studies.

Others, such as Daisy, chose to explore different opportunities. She shared her previous experience in the water engineering industry, where she operated controller panels in water facilities and conducted lab testing and site visits, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the industry in a relatively short time.

Sharon, the Founder of GREENIES, also shared her journey. Inspired by the surplus of clothing during the COVID-19 pandemic, she established a social enterprise and eco-platform for second-hand clothing, promoting sustainability and reducing waste. In the early stages of her business, she managed daily operations and the collection of second-hand clothes. As the business grew, she transitioned these responsibilities to her staff and now focuses on back-office tasks such as marketing and collaborations with other organizations.

Similarly, Donald and Polo are currently working in business settings that are not directly related to their degrees. However, they emphasized that their training as science students has greatly benefited their growth and performance. They noted that, compared to graduates with BBA degrees, science graduates possess unique advantages, such as the ability to learn quickly and adapt easily to new policies and changes.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the alumni, many of that travelled long distances to return to campus and share their valuable experiences and insights with our students. We look forward to organizing more events that connect our students with successful alumni in the future!
