On 1 Dec 2023, a few students and teachers have boarded the HADALX Research Vessel in Tsim Sha Tsui. The Shen Kuo Research Vessel was designed by China Ship Scientific Research Center, and built and operated by Tehe Ocean Technology Group. Since 2018, the vessel has completed more than 30 oceanic research missions, visiting the world's deepest trench, the Mariana Trench, on several occasions to conduct deep-sea exploration missions. In summer 2023, OCES has welcomed 42 Form 4 and 5 secondary students from all over Hong Kong to join the 4-day 'Discovering Ocean Science' Summer Camp. This course aims to increase students' understanding towards Hong Kong marine ecology and biodiversity and to promote the importance of marine conservation. Read more

To enhance the learning experience, two OST students were sponsored by the Department of Ocean Science to participate in a 1-month summer exchange program named The Vancouver Summer Program (VSP) in The University of British Columbia, Canada. Offered by the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, students attended project-based courses related to the environmental challenges now we are facing, from overexploitation and marine pollution to climate change and ocean acidification. The HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Team has been named champion in Explorer Class of the Hong Kong Regional of the MATE International ROV Competition 2023. The ROV Team, a sub-team of the HKUST Robotics Team, will represent Hong Kong to join the MATE International ROV Competition 2023, which will be held in Longmont, Colorado in Jun 2023. Read more
