It is with great pride that we announce Prof. Cindy Lam (left), Assistant Professor of Science Education in the Department of Ocean Science, has been awarded a Silver Medal in the “Protection of the Environment – Recycling” category at the renowned International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. This prestigious annual event, established in 1972, highlights innovative inventions from around the world and attracts participants from diverse fields, including Technology, Healthcare, and Engineering.

Prof. Lam received this honour for her invention, Smart Fish for the Rapid Detection of Multiple Types of Microplastics in the Ocean. This innovative prototype is designed for real-time sampling and detection of microplastics and tire wear particles in coastal waters. By utilizing specific dyes. The Smart Fish autonomously identifies contaminants with remarkable accuracy, significantly contributing to efforts aimed at mitigating microplastic pollution.

The Smart Fish offers rapid and precise on-site detection and characterization of microplastics and vehicle tire wear particles, making it an invaluable tool for environmental monitoring. Its ability to differentiate between various plastic types and tire wear particles using composite dyes enhances its effectiveness in addressing this pressing environmental issue.

Prof. Lam’s achievement not only highlights her dedication to ocean science and environmental protection but also serves as an inspiration for creativity and innovation within our department and beyond. We congratulate her on this remarkable accomplishment and look forward to her continued contributions to the field.
