"I’m very honored to receive the fellowship. I would like to thank French Consulate for offering this recognition, and thank my advisor Dr. Julian Mak and the host Dr. Camille Lique from LOPS for their great support for the application. I look forward to engaging with French scientific community and contributing to Arctic Ocean research."
- Dr. Yue WU

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Yue WU (middle) has been awarded the prestigious Anita Conti Sustainable Innovation Fellowship Scholarship.
Dr. Wu is currently a post-doctoral fellow working with Prof. Julian MAK (Principal Investigator) in the Department of Ocean Science (OCES) at HKUST. Her research interests focus on understanding ocean processes in Arctic Ocean, particularly ocean dynamics and air-sea interactions in response to sea-ice retreat under climate change.

Award Winning Research Project:
“The dynamical influences of mesoscale eddies in the Arctic Ocean in the future climate”. The project aims to explore dynamics of mesoscale eddies coupled with sea-ice cover and their role in climate feedbacks with sea-ice retreat. This is critical for the prediction of the Arctic Ocean environment and the further climate system.

Project Objectives:

  • Understanding the characteristics of the mesoscale eddies under the ice-ocean coupling, including energy dissipation timescales, trajectories, and spatial-temporal variability.
  • How do mesoscale eddies influence the balance in Beaufort Gyre, and consequently Arctic Ocean circulation? How might their roles evolve with continued sea ice retreat?
  • What is the impact of ice-ocean stress on the eddy dissipation Does it simply damp eddy kinetic energy, or does it trigger compensatory energy transfers that alter eddy longevity?

Project time-period:
September 2025 – December 2025
Hosting laboratory:
Laboratory for Ocean Physics and Satellite remote sensing (LOPS), part of Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER)

Dr. Wu will spend time at LOPS to further explore her field and will also make a short visit to École Normale Supérieure – PSL (ENS-PSL).

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Wu on this significant achievement! We look forward to her continued contributions to the field of ocean science.

About The Fellowship
The Anita Conti Sustainable Innovation Fellowship allows current research assistants, post-doctorates or doctoral students residing in Hong Kong and Macau from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to spend three months conducting research related to sustainability in a laboratory in France. This mobility grant is funded by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau to promote innovation for a sustainable future in the framework of the HKUST-France Memorandum of Understanding.
