A group of OST UG students had the incredible opportunity to visit the renowned Xue Long 2 icebreaker docked at the Tsim Sha Tsui Ocean Terminal on 10 April 2024.
Upon stepping aboard, students are warmly greeted by the ship's crew. The tour took students through various rooms and facilities, for example, scientists' bedroom, gym room, seminar rooms, laboratories, each serving a unique purpose in supporting the scientific research conducted on board. The living quarters provided insight into the daily lives of the crew members. Although compact, the rooms are meticulously designed to maximize space and provide comfort during long expeditions. Our students had the chance to talk with crew members, who shared their real-life experiences in living on board for years.
Ascending to the top deck, students could visit the control room which is the nerve center of the icebreaker. By interacting with distinguish scientists, students gained a deeper understanding of the coordination and precision required to navigate through polar regions and conduct successful scientific research.
