On 9 September 2025, two BSc in Ocean Science and Technology (OST) students, Mr. Horace Lam and Mr. Harun Tin, were awarded The David England HK Natural History Award 2025. This prestigious award recognizes the impressive contributions both students have made to research, volunteering, and nature conservation in Hong Kong. The HKUST Department of Ocean Science (OCES) nominated these two outstanding students to the HK Natural History Society Committee. Initially, the award was limited to one recipient; however, after careful consideration during the interview process, the Committee decided to honor both students due to their evident passion for conservation and the natural environment in Hong Kong.
During the winners talk, Horace and Harun gave inspiring presentations sharing their experiences of participating conservation projects and the importance of natural protection. Horace shared his extensive knowledge about dolphins, particularly the Chinese White Dolphin, drawing from his two years of experience as a Conservation Assistant at the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation (OPCF). He discussed his involvement in handling dolphin stranding cases and participating in various conservation efforts, including Horseshoe Crab surveys and stranding rescues, highlighting the importance of protecting marine life.
Harun focused on his diverse experiences in various programs and projects, both locally and internationally. He spoke about his work in marine conservation, including initiatives related to sea turtles and marine biodiversity surveys, as well as his efforts in horseshoe crab conservation. His dedication to raising awareness about these critical issues resonated with the audience, showcasing the vital role young conservationists play in safeguarding Hong Kong's unique ecosystems.
The ceremony concluded with a call to action for fellow students and community members to engage in environmental conservation efforts. Both Horace and Harun expressed their gratitude for the recognition and encouraged others to follow their passion for protecting nature.
The David England HK Natural History Award not only celebrates individual achievements but also serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility we all share in preserving the natural world. Congratulations to Horace and Harun for their well-deserved recognition and may their commitment to conservation inspire others in the community!
