In summer 2023, OCES welcomed 42 Form 4 and 5 secondary students from across Hong Kong to a 4-day "Discovering Ocean Science" Summer Camp. This event was designed with several key objectives aligned with the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources:
• Raising awareness: By exposing students to Hong Kong's marine ecosystems, the camp aimed to increase understanding of local marine biodiversity and its challenges.
• Fostering environmental stewardship: Through hands-on activities and field visits, HKUST sought to instil a sense of responsibility and encourage active participation in marine conservation efforts.
• Developing scientific skills: Students visited the HKUST Ocean Science Research Facility, participating in laboratory sessions on microplastic detection and water property measurement. These activities introduced students to marine research methodologies, potentially inspiring future careers in ocean science. On the final day, students presented on topics such as "Biodiversity of Mudflats & Mangroves" and "Marine Litter & Microplastics."
• Promoting sustainable practices: By focusing on issues like marine litter and microplastics, the camp highlighted human impacts on marine environments and encouraged sustainable behaviours.
• Building a community of young conservationists: The camp provided a platform for like-minded students to connect, share ideas, and potentially collaborate on future marine conservation initiatives.
Through these objectives, HKUST aimed to contribute to broader marine conservation and sustainable resource management goals by educating and empowering the next generation of environmental stewards. This aligns with global efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources.
